This section contains notes on different kinds of alternative medicine and therapies that we practise or take interest in.
What is homeopathy?
Homeopathy is a holistic medical system, it takes a broad view of illness, the causes of disease and the way in which the individual expresses their illness.
As a holistic medicine it takes all aspects of the individual into consideration and seeks to cure the patient, not the disease.
It is safe, gentle and effective and can be used to treat many illnesses and imbalances be they physical, mental or emotional.
The remedies used are usually prepared from naturally occurring substances which go through a process of dilution and succession (vigorous shaking). Through this process of ‘potentisation’, any toxicity is removed and the dynamic healing power of the crude substance is stimulated.
The appropriate remedy is selected for the individual using ‘the law of similars’.
The law of similars
The word ‘homeopathy’ is from the Greek: omio = same and pathos = suffering. Hippocrates (400 BC) was the first person in the western tradition to record the fact that a diseased person can be cured by substances which cause the body to develop similar symptoms.
For example: we are familiar with the effects of coffee, coffee stimulates the system, sends the pulse racing and prevents sleep. When potentised into the homeopathic remedy Coffea, the same substance can be used to calm the insomniac who cannot sleep for excitement, his mind racing and over stimulated.
The theory is that two similar states cannot co exist in the same body and that the homeopathic remedy ‘absorbs’ the symptoms of the sufferer.
What happens during homeopathic consultation?
A first homeopathic consultation can take up to one hour. During this time you will be asked many questions about your symptoms, your family background and medical history, your diet, sleep pattern, preferred environments etc.
This information will be interpreted and matched to a remedy which would cause similar symptoms in an otherwise healthy person.
Although you may only be given 2 or 3 remedies to take over a short period of time the action of the remedies is of long duration. The remedies work by resonance sending a strong signal to the body’s vital force which is in turn stimulated towards a greater state of health.
Essentially, the homeopathic remedies stimulate the body to heal itself.
Flowers attract lifeHumans and flowers have had a love affair since the beginning of time. We use flowers in many rites of passage, birth, marriage, worship, illness and death.
Dr Edward Bach is the name most commonly associated with flower essences. He developed his range of 38 flower essences in 1930’s England. Since then many others have explored the healing potential of flower essences and their power to act as a catalyst for inner growth.
Like homeopathic remedies, flower essences have their own subtle energy which impacts on the vitality of the individual. However, they do not operate on ‘the law of similars’ rather on ‘the law of contraries’. As Dr Bach said they, “ Flood our natures with the particular virtues we need, and wash out from us the fault that is causing harm”.
Flower essences make a contribution to our inner growth through their potential to eliminate limiting and/or damaging patterns of thought or behavior. For example, Bach’s Holly addresses feelings of jealousy, hostility and envy which keep us separate from others and prevent us interacting with trust. Taking Holly flower essence enhances our personal feeling of wholeness, inclusiveness and trust in our relationships with others.
These days there are dozens of flower essences ranges from around the world which address many and varied emotional and psychological patterns.
Flower essences are preserved in a little brandy and are usually taken from a dropper bottle directly onto the tongue. They are also effective when absorbed through the skin in baths or as topical applications.
A 30 ml dosage bottle will last approximately one month if taken 4 drops 3x daily.
If using in bath tub add 20 drops to water and stir with hand for 1 minute. Soak in tub for 20 minutes or so.
What is Reiki?
Reiki is a method of hands on healing which originated in Japan.
Rei means Universal in Japanese and Ki means life force.
Universal energy or life force runs through all living things. It has been recognised by many cultures over the centuries – known as chi to the Chinese, prajna in Sanskrit and ka to the ancient Egyptians.
This concept of life force is used in many complimentary therapies such as shiatsu and acupuncture as well as practices such as yoga and tai chi.
The life force flows through us all but may become blocked during illness or at times of stress. A Reiki treatment assists in clearing these energy blockages and increases the flow of vital force through the body.
How Reiki works
The reiki practitioner acts as a channel for the life force by using various hand positions to direct the flow of vital force along the length of the body This ‘extra’ energy flows through the body releasing blocks and helping to restore the natural flow of energy through the system.
The effect of the treatment is not always immediate or obvious although for some people it can be dramatic and instant. Some people may become very relaxed after a treatment whilst others are energized by the experience. The response very much depends on what each individual needs for their healing at the time.
